eBrevia CTO Jacob Mundt Speaks on How In-House Teams Can Do More with Gen AI at Legal Innovators California
“Gatekeeping is dead,” eBrevia cofounder and Chief Technology Officer, Jacob Mundt stressed during a recent panel discussion at Legal Innovators California in San Francisco. Mundt explained that outside counsel is no longer is in a position to use AI to drive up their firms’ margins: “That’s done,” he said.

Instead, in-house teams should be collaborating with outside counsel and making the most of their expertise with new technology.
“If your outside counsel is not helping you build better processes, build software, if they’re not sharing the tools and saying, ‘This is how we do it, it’s awesome and you should adopt these tools.’ If they’re not giving you that kind of expert guidance — that’s what you’re paying them for,” Mundt said.
“You’re not paying them to read documents; you’ve always been paying them for guidance on things you don’t know.”
Mundt elaborated, noting that lawyers providing outside counsel have exposure to many more tools, and use them on a higher volume of documents. He suggested acknowledging that they are using a tool behind the scenes, set the terms of engagement, and learn from their experience.
“You should trust their guidance. If they say, ‘Use GPT,’ they’ve probably tried it.”
The session, titled “Doing More In-House with Generative AI,” explored the ramifications of rapid Gen AI adoption from both vendor and in house perspectives. Also on the panel were:
• Emmanuelle Brissaud, Director, Legal PMO, Meta
• Meg Heil, VP of Strategy and Operations & Assistant Corporate Secretary, Coherent
• Kunal Tanwar, Director of AI, Business Intelligence & Data Management, Google
• Charlie Connor (moderator), Associate Director, Legal Business Consulting, Gravity Stack
