eBrevia Joins South East Business Insider Roundtable on Planning for Growth

Tomorrow, eBrevia Senior Director Abbas Khan will join a group of business leaders and advisers in Reading (UK) for a South East Business Insider roundtable on planning for growth, expansion or exit in a turbulent economic market.

The invitation presents an opportunity to step back from the day-to-day work of building legal technology and discuss the bigger questions facing growing businesses: How do you scale without losing what makes the company work? How do you keep evolving as markets and technology change? And how do you build a business that can stay focused when the environment around it is constantly shifting?

Staying close to the people using the product

Being an honest broker with clients has remained a core eBrevia value over the years. That means keeping multiple channels of communication open by talking with senior decision-makers as well as the people using our solutions day to day. It’s critical to understand where eBrevia is delivering value today and where there are gaps, so we can examine how changes in technology or the way legal teams work could create new opportunities.

It also means being willing to tell a client when another solution may be a better fit. The goal is to help organizations make good decisions about contract technology and AI, not to force every problem into an eBrevia-shaped solution.

That kind of relationship provides something valuable beyond customer feedback. It gives us a much clearer view of where the market is actually going.

Consistency doesn't mean standing still

eBrevia has had its share of changes over the years, including significant changes in ownership. What has remained consistent is our leadership, our focus on contracts and AI, and a fairly clear understanding of what we do (and what we don't). Such continuity matters when you're operating in a market moving as quickly as legal technology.

At the same time, consistency can't mean resisting change. Both technology and client expectations are changing. Plus our clients' own clients are asking them to work differently.

Our approach is to respond to those changes through an ongoing feedback loop rather than trying to predict the future from a distance. Conversations with clients feed into conversations between product, engineering, sales and leadership, and that information makes its way into our products continuously.

The result is evolution that is practical and incremental: solving problems we're actually hearing about, while keeping pace with — and often getting ahead of — changes in the technology itself.

Growth means investing in the business

Sustainable growth also requires putting revenue back into the company. At eBrevia, that has meant continuing to invest heavily in engineering and product development, a choice supported by co-founders’ Adam Nguyen and Jake Mundt purchase of the company in 2023. We believe that if we are going to maintain a meaningful position in a rapidly changing technology market, we need to keep improving the technology.

That requires investment, but it also requires internal communication. Product and sales teams speak regularly, leadership stays close to customers, and members of the executive team participate directly in client conversations. That creates a relatively short path between what we're hearing in the market and what we're building.

It's not a complicated model. But maintaining it as a company grows takes deliberate effort.

Bringing the conversation back to the market

That's what Abbas will bring to tomorrow's discussion: a perspective shaped by working directly with legal teams and by helping build a specialized AI company through a period of significant technological and economic change.

We're looking forward to hearing how other business leaders and advisers are approaching the same questions from very different parts of the market.

The South East Business Insider roundtable, Planning for Growth, Expansion or Exit in a Turbulent Economic Market, takes place Tuesday, September 29, at the Pollen Room in Green Park, Reading. The event is hosted by South East Business Insider in partnership with HCR Law and will bring together business leaders and advisers for a discussion on growth, funding, resilience, talent and building long-term value.
